Ottawa wants to scale back the lowering of our flag at the Peace Tower. Opposition MPs tabled a motion on April 2nd calling for the flag at half-mast every time a Canadian dies in a military mission. A special advisory panel, headed up by Robert Watt, the former Chief Herald of Canada, recommends that all who have died in battle in all wars are commemorated once a year on Remembrance Day. The Royal Canadian Legion agrees.

Flags in the News
After 13 years, Don Flynn has retired as the familiar face and the general manager of The Flag Shop in Victoria. Don FlynnFlynn was caught, after 22 years, in the Woodward's department store's sudden closure. He didn't know much about flags but, in his own words, he "learned quickly that there is a lot more to flags than a piece of coloured fabric". The Flag Shop owner, Jamie Webb, said Don will be missed. "He is a kind soul and the customers love him". Flynn's successor, Joan Krop, is looking forward to meeting Don's regular customers as well as welcoming new ones!

Union Jack
You have heard the expression, I'm a Brit: Hear me Roar. Well, when I see the Union Jack displayed upside down, Hear Me Roar.

Finally. A Compromise!

After four or five false starts, on January 22nd, Iraq finally adopted a new flag - Iraq Flagsubject to a review in one year. This flag is quite different from the one reported on in our winter Flag & Banner. It still has the red, white and black horizontal stripes which have symbolized pan-Arab unity since 1958.The inscription, in Kufic script, reads God is Almighty. The compromise included the Kurds' demand that their symbol be in the design and the stars associated with Saddam Hussein were removed. The Iraqi parliament will take a reading in a year to see if all parties are still happy.

Is it Kosovo or Kosova?

The newly formed republic officially displayed its flag on February 17th. The flag design is the outline map of the country with an arc of 6 white stars. Kosovo or Kosova? Kosova FlagThe 90% Muslims say Kosova and the 10% Serbians says Kosovo. However, in deference to the new government of the country, in our catalogue, we are choosing to say Kosova. Our Flag Shops report that the sale of Serbians flags across our country has been brisk so emotions are running very deep since the inauguration of the new country. Britain and the United States were the first to give official recognition to Kosovo. On March 18th.Canada gave its assent. "The development of Kosovo into a democratic, multi-ethnic state that fully respects human rights is essential for peace, political stability and economic progress in the Balkans," said our Foreign Affairs Minister, Maxime Bernier.

Happy 400
Quebec flags are proudly welcoming the world to the 400th anniversary celebrations. In Quebec Flag1608, Samuel de Champlain founded a settlement at Kebec, an Algonquin word meaning "place where the river narrows." This was the first permanent French settlement in North America. French farmers, labourers, and tradesmen left their homeland under the guise of building the New France. Fleeing misery imposed by France's taxman who was financing the Thirty Year War on the backs of the peasantry, they were really seeking a new life as settlers. With the help of the famous Filles du Roy - orphaned woman who were sent to the colony to marry the single men - they were the forefathers of hundreds of thousands Canadians.

Tonnes of Flags

You may remember, in our winter edition, we wrote an open letter to the Hon. Josee Verner, our Minister of Canadian Heritage, asking where and how we could Burning flagburn our Canada flags - the recommended way of disposing of them when not suitable for displaying. We did not get a reply from Minister Verner, but we did hear from the City of Burnaby. We were advised that all garbage in Burnaby is incinerated, i.e. burned, so we could put flags into any disposal can in Burnaby and know that we have done our duty. It really doesn't seem right to put our flag into a garbage can but unless someone has a better idea to propose to the folks in Ottawa, we are following their rules! Does your municipality incinerate its garbage? If so, send me an e-mail so the Flag Shop in that area can pass along the information to its customers.

Peace Symbol

Peace Flag50 years ago, in 1957 the Peace Symbol was born. Threat of a nuclear war motivated Gerald Holtom, a British textile designer, to create the flag which symbolizes "an individual in despair, with palms outstretched downwards" set in a ring to represent the earth. The Peace Symbol is, in the words of Dr. Whitney Smith, of the Flag Research Center, a "sad commentary of mankind's constant failure to end the wars that have continued around the world."
